Death by Google

I watched a really interesting documentary on CNBC on Big Brother and found out to my amazement that Google keeps ALL their logs, which means that every single search ever done on Google from anywhere in the world is stored! That along with records of all IP addresses doing those searches. Isnt that scary? If they wanted to, they could dig out all the Google searches you did in 2006. And 2005. And 2004. You get the picture.

I’m surprised I didnt know about this. Apparently they even convicted someone of murder in the States by checking his Google searches. He had googled terms like “life insurance” and “chest gun shot trauma” a couple of months before he murdered his wife.

Big Brother’s watching.

This is true, and yet it’s false.

Someone was convicted of murder and their Google search phrases were used in the trial, but the information was not supplied by Google.

The search phrases were found on the suspect’s hard drive.

The convenience of the autofill function should be occasionally cleared if you’re using search engines to find useful tips on how to kill your wife. (Though the phrases were not ‘life insurance’ and ‘chest shot gun trauma’ but the almost onomatopoeic ‘neck snap break’)

The case you’re referring to is a different one which took place in 2005, where evidence collected from a suspect’s hard drive was used to convict him. Link to article here.

The case I was talking about is a more recent one: Link here.

The impression I got from watching the cnbc documentary was that Google was subpoenaed to provide the search results, but to their credit, they have also recently refused to release millions of search records to the US dept of justice. Good article here: When Google is not your friend.
