A False Dawn

There was an article in yesterday’s Sunday Times (Apr 2) about the new Cathay building. In it, the writer quoted several “experts” about how the new building does not preserve the essence of the old Cathay.

Oh please. I’m gobsmacked by the atrocious “journalism” behind the article.

Week after week, I come across pieces in ST that are self-indulgent, biased, lazy and unbalanced. Yesterday’s article took the cake.

Right from the beginning, the writer quotes an unnamed movie-goer who had unpleasant things to say about the building. Since when has ST allowed anonymous sources? When unnamed sources are used, there’s a danger lazy journalists will simply write their own quote and attribute it to an anonymous source.

The writer then goes on to report several “experts”, who all had negative things to say. Did she not find one single “expert” who thought otherwise? Or did she exclude those to advance her own opinion?

She then said that it’s a well-known fact the building’s owners had problems with the authorities in getting their original plans approved. The final design you see is a compromise, after several frustrating rounds with the authorities.

At this point, any rookie journalist in a campus newspaper would have asked the authorities to comment. Not this writer. She was happy to leave it at that.

I’m fuming. Granted I’m not the most objective person when it comes to the Cathay, but that was one of the most lopsided, lazy and plain irresponsible articles I have ever read.

The Cathay is a private building. If she wants to lament about lost heritage, write about the loss of the National Library instead. Or Clifford Pier.

Have some guts. And integrity.

I’m kinda sad to see Clifford Pier go. We need another “lifestyle hub” like we need a hole in our heads.

I find it’s much less stressful just to not read the Straits Times altogether.
