Nothing Gold Can Stay

The Outsiders

Just read on dsng that Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders has been recut and was released just two days ago. I was a big fan of S E Hinton while I was growing up and read all her books. I also got hold of a tape of the movie somehow and remember being disappointed with it, and also that the Stevie Wonder song, Stay Gold, sounded kinda funny. God knows what my 14-year-old mind was thinking though.

But my favourite one from the genre, was Walk Through Cold Fire, which seems to have become a collectors’ item of sorts. It’s one of those books I read over and over again, and one of those books I never forgot.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I LOVED the movie…and that poem. Can’t believe I watched it yonks ago but it’s still so fresh to me now. Thanks for the tip on the new re-cut version. Wonder if more scenes have been added or if it was just a tidy-up. Whatever it is…I’m going to bug HMV or Gramaphone for a copy. LOL!

Coppola said the recut version would be closer to the book. I don’t have a strong impression of the movie. I think I kinda just fast forwarded through it cos it was due and I was in a hurry to leave the house. Or maybe it was just cos it was so long ago.

I read the book for English. Im in the 7th grade.
And I hate it.
I really do.
The movie is okay…I guess.
But the book was a disgrace.
The only thing that Ponyboy could describe was the faces and the people. Well, what about the fight? It took three pages on describing the prep. And the fight lasted all of one page. And Johnny’s death. Was all of two sentences. I felt no emotions for any of the deaths, I felt no emotion for anyone. I was never excited to read this for homework. And I was not wanting my English teacher to continue reading when he asked the class. Not a page turned. A page rip off.
Giving it a 1 out of 10. Vey very poor.

I first read and watched The Outsiders when I was in gr 7, now im in gr 10. The first time I read it I hated it but when I read it again a week or so ago, i couldn’t put it down and finished it in just a couple of hours. I thought it was too short of a book and I wish that S.E. Hinton had written more.

I just finished reading the book for English class and read it in 3 hours! i was totally submerged in it. i reakon SE Hinton should have written more though, i think she could have talked more about the rumble, the hearing, and Johnny’s death. overall 8/10. mwazzzz…
