Shopping Singapore II
I got tired to scrolling through the 84 comments every time I came to this thread, so I’m consolidating everyone’s recommendations here. Thanks thanks thanks to everybody for their nice links and please keep them coming so that we can have the best collection of local shopping sites right here!
Update:I’ve decided to close this thread because it has become cluttered with a bunch of not-so-nice sites which are not recommended by anyone other than the owners or their friends. The original intention was for people to share nice links that they’ve come across, not for it to be abused as a form of free advertisement.

Hi! I got here from Dsng’s page and I couldn’t resist the urge to add to your list of shops. My friend just set up a shop selling earrings at Rachel and Judith. I’m not sure if it’s the kind of thing you guys will like, but some of her designs are lovely and the prices are very reasonable (~ $9 to $11). I love what you have here, by the way. I have learnt a lot about typography by reading your entries. =]

Posted by: Anonymous at April 19, 2005 04:45 PMI bought a few pair of earrings from a website that I saw here - www.ameliasgems.com I like the earrings and the owner is very nice and helpful too. In fact, my company D&D coming up soon and I thought of buying another pair from her..hee..hee…this time something elegant maybe…but I wonder how come her website not updated yet since I last saw it though…hmmmm..think I’m gonna call her and ask..

Have my own site specializing in the selling of hand-made earrings… will post it up when I upload the latest batch of earrings… after my exams, which will end in abt 4 days time… The 4 sites above are sum affordable sites selling accessories and bags…
Btw… this is a great site for all online shopaholics… Keep It Up!
I think this is a wonderful thihng that you started. Do keep it up and i will keep a look out for interesting websites.
Posted by: shikin at April 27, 2005 12:42 PMTired of beaded accessories? Check out our site, nice local handcrafted jewelries using stained glass and metal. You’ll love it!!
Posted by: Bum Bee Design at April 28, 2005 12:38 AMOne thing I’ve noticed about local shopping sites is that the owners tend to sell things that they import rather than things that they make themselves. Is this true?
Posted by: Karen at April 28, 2005 10:21 AMYep! The trend now is that the owners shopped overseas for things which they think cannot be found in Singapore. Many bags and accessories can be found in countries like Thailand, Indonesia and so on. The things there are cheap and it’s even cheaper if you buy in bulk. It’s easy to start a shopping site with only a small capital. It’s a lucrative business and many local shopping sites are springing out just like that. It’s different from the last time where people sell things which they made. People who sell handmade things are more of as a hobby to them and the sense of satisfaction they get when they see people on the streets wearing or carrying the things they made.
Posted by: Beverly at April 28, 2005 12:14 PMi totally agree wif Beverly… the feeling of having someone recognizing and liking ur product enough to wan to buy it is realli realli satisfying… which is why I price my earrings at very reasonable prices, unlike many online shops I noe which prices common simple earrings at over $10…
Anw I’m one of those dat like to online window shop… cos never actually buy anything frm shops themselves… other than auctions if u’d consider dat a shop too. Juz wondering if many pple actually buy those bags, apparels and accessories online… since as Beverly said, many of these can actually be bought at a very low price at places lyk Thailand…
Posted by: =xuan= at April 28, 2005 05:52 PMhello there!
love your blog. could you compile a list of great online vintage fashion shops from Singapore?
appreciate it!
even if thailand or indonesia is near, the cost of travelling there and accomodation is also not that cheap. vendors also need to buy and price their products sufficently to cover the cost of travel etc.
Posted by: sally at April 29, 2005 12:32 AMYes, the cost of travelling to other countries are not that cheap. I agree with Sally that the vendors do have to price their products sufficiently to cover their costs. I know this as I have sold imported handmade beaded sandals before. People do buy bags, accessories and apparels online. As for how many, I do not know. The disadvantage of shopping online is that you cannot try or touch and feel the products before deciding on buying. The advantage is you can shop at the convenience with just a click and also, you can get things which you cannot get in Singapore. Some of the vendors I know of has actually priced their imported products quite reasonably or even a bit lower than the price overseas. (referring to US & UK). It benefits shoppers as they do not have to travel all the way to get the things they want. It saves on the travelling costs. I myself do buy things online too. So far, I have bought myself a top, a brooch, 2 bags and a necklace for a friend. It all actually depends on individual. Different people have different views. For me, if I really like the things that I see online and find that the prices are reasonable enough, I would buy it.
Posted by: Beverly at April 29, 2005 11:15 AMYar I agree wif the not being able to touch for feel or try on the clothes u see online… and for me I’ve decided against buying clothings online already because the few times I bought tops online I’m usually disappointed wif wad is sent to me… maybe photos are really deceiving? Haha…
Anw I’d just updated a new batch of earrings on my shop, finally finished exams… *phew*
Pls visit to take a look…I’m waiting for my fren to design a nicer website for mi… so gotta make do with this in the meantime…
Posted by: =xuan= at April 29, 2005 10:12 PMI think it’s not a matter of whether or not they are common simple earrings. I think it’s the quality of the materials used. I have ever seen two shops selling the same design of earrings. But the 1st shop uses Swarovski crystals and when I asked the other shop, they used either plastic cyrstals or glass crystals; hence, they charge lower prices. I think prices cannot be judged just by looking at the design BUT by the materials used. By the way, I’ve just bought myself a few pairs of earrings (online, of course!! *LOL*) and paid about $11 on average for each pair. I’m happy and satisfied cos I know it’s the quality and authenticity of the earrings that count :-)
Posted by: Zenoa at April 30, 2005 12:07 PMWell, the materials used do matter to a certain extent but I believe that workmanship is also very important. If one pair of earrings uses a few swarovski crystals and just hang them together in a line, compared to another pair of earrings which uses normal glass crystals but have them hung together in a complicated design with alot of twisting of wires, but cos of the material used, the first pair sells much higher than the 2nd, which would u buy? I tink I’ll get the 2nd one, afterall… how difficult is it stringing swarovski crystals together in a line? And the thing is, there are many of such plain earrings out there but uses good crystals… so, actually, it’s realli up to the individual themselves…
Posted by: Sharon at May 1, 2005 11:39 PMHmm… dats quite true too, abt Zenoa’s pt abt the quality of the beads used. As for my shop, I do not use Swarovski crystals but glass crystals, which might explain why I could price my earrings at this price. That is cos when it cums to crystals I like to make earrings that have alot of them, instead of juz a few, which actually cant make up how nice a design la… and if I use Swarovski crystals for that, the cost price will be rather high and the price will be way higher… I’d like to tink of it more of selling my design and workmanship. Well at least I’m upfront abt it and dun overcharge. I know of frens who got cheated many times online, by sellers who claim on their website that they use Swarovski crystals, and when they paid up the exorbitant price, the earrings they received uses nothing like Swarovski crystals. That’s rather unethical I tink…
Posted by: =xuan= at May 2, 2005 12:01 AMYES it’s true alot ppl buy from Thailand. Even if they make the necklaces and earrings themselves, the materials used are always beads. In order to make your design stands out from other ppl’s design, I would say it’s pretty mind cracking. That’s why I moved away from beads and started using stained glass and other materials.
I find local market too small and hard to make a living selling online, so I started selling on ebay and that has fetched me better sales. My user id on ebay is bumbum124, check out my works! :)

Posted by: Thres at May 4, 2005 06:32 PMHi, just accidentally dropped by. Found alot of info on online shopping. I usually shopped from Auction, now I have more choices to choose from. Thanks!
Posted by: julie at May 7, 2005 07:07 PMI’ve bought from Bordello Princess before. It was a poncho, in good condition, but what was not clear enough from the website picture was that the thread used for one of the colours had run out, and a substitute was used to finish off the poncho, which resulted in two similar but distinct shades. The other thing was that the colour was not as seen on my monitor - it looked deeper than the real thing. Neither of these I blame on the vendors of that site, as it is something you definitely have to check out for yourself. Ask for more photos before buying, and, seeing they ARE local, go look at the product for yourself if you really love it.
I love vintage, and have been buying for years when I lived away. The bad part of vintage is that it is unique, often used, and not standard sizing or colour. There are no substitutes. So check carefully before you buy. Also check dimensions carefully - does the length, etc suit your height and size, assuming the waist and other essentials fit.
One last thing. I do feel the prices at bordello princess, and a number of the local vintage sites rather high for the item, as compared to equivalent to other overseas vintage sites. Sure, there is a cost for bring it over here. But you could consider doing the shipping yourself.
I’ve tried some US-based sites:- Good reliable ones I’ve used are www.vintage-instyle.com (Michelle updates her bag styles a lot, and her descriptions and pictures are an education in themselves). Her site is not fancy looking, but uploads so well that it should be a a lesson to those who have loads of fancy graphics with no decent stock to show for it.
Also www.poshvintage.com. This is a very hip 70s influenced vintage site with a nice section on reworked vintage. Beautiful pictures.
For lower cost vintage, try www.vintageblues.com. For the latter a bag got damaged in delivery, and they were very good about giving me credit for it for future purchases.
The plus of local sites is that you seldom have to have postage, or much, if you do. Bordello delivered to my door for free, and the item was well wrapped, no smells (very very important!). I’d buy from them again if I saw anything I liked, but they don’t update their web stuff as often as I’d like. So do your checking on pricing and shipping as well. If you love it..of course…!!
Anyway, nothing was as expensive as a bag I had bought at Potion, which was wayyyy overpriced for a no name bag. But I was talked into it so my policy was to enjoy it :)
Posted by: Baglady at May 7, 2005 09:56 PMHey, thanks for sharing your experiences with us!
Posted by: Karen at May 7, 2005 11:41 PMHey for the shy ppl who wants privacy for adult toys and lingerie shopping, check out this beautiful website in Singapore, IMHO i think is the best :
Other Singapore adult site i’ve came across are :
www.U4ria.com.sg
www.mylittleshirt.com.sg
www.sensualitystore.com
www.esensual.com.sg
I bought necklaces from Ola-Lola and Green Petals and I was rather satisfied with their service. I even bought bags online before.
One thing I like abt online shopping is that most of the owners actually provide extra customer service since they need support from consumers like us. Unlike when you are walk-in customer, sometimes the salesperson don’t really bother abt u.
If there is one thing abt the salesperson in Sg is tt they are either have this can’t-be-bother attitude or too pushy. PS. This is just a general point of view.
i thought i might, since my term’s almost over, use my paprikan address for this comment!

Posted by: Randy at May 10, 2005 05:03 PMHey, I have been reading your blog and its really good for shopping list! Must say its really useful.
BTW, have contacts for free new products for all the big brands for cosmetics and skin care except Shiseido. Are you interested?
Posted by: XT at May 10, 2005 05:42 PMOf course I’m interested. I love trying out new products. Heard that Prescriptives is pulling out of Singapore end of this year. Gotta go get my stash.
Posted by: Karen at May 11, 2005 12:23 AMYeah man, better order the stuff before they are all out. The Prescriptives at Tangs will be there till June. The rest of the outlets will be closed this May if I am not wrong. Need to get my custom blend powder! Oh man… gonna look for another equivalent brand.
Posted by: Beverly at May 11, 2005 10:24 AMJust wanna mention the online shopping sites which I have bought things from- Bag of Love, Urban Nymph, Surreal Style, Rachel & Judith and Life Story Designs.
Kudos to the owners of Bag of Love & Urban Nymph for their great customer service which I feel are very important and essential for their customers to want to go back and shop more. So far, all the things I bought online are all in good condition and I am very happy with the products.
Posted by: Beverly at May 11, 2005 11:49 AMHello,
If you and your friends are interested in testing new cosmetics products before it gets launch, I have just the thing for you.
I am helping my friend who owns a French cosmetic testing company call Syres. The website is www.syres.fr. Go check it out if you are interested. You get to test all the big brands except shiseido, products which they intend to launch in a year’s time. And we will only give you products suitable for your skin.
If you are interested, just email me at lxueting.syres@wanadoo.fr and I will feed you with more details.
Let me know once you have replied by posting another comment here. Thanks!
Posted by: XT at May 11, 2005 04:02 PMYou may be interested in checking out www.cosmeticscop.com, where they review hundreds of cosmetic products. I was terribly interested in seeing the expensive compared against the drugstore brands to see if there was any difference. Up to you to decide if the reviews are accurate or reliable but considering how much we spend on the stuff…worth a look!
I popped into Orchard Emerald today and there was a great little handbag sale by Inspira - very low priced fun bags, all their own designs. Third floor. They have a sale on this week for beaded bags. I bought two!! I am hoping ther will design a bit more upmarket models since I like their designs a lot.
Posted by: baglady at May 11, 2005 09:11 PMAs a matter of fact, I’m using some products from Paula’s Choice. Someone brings it in to Singapore.
I’m using the One Step Face Cleanser and Final Touch Toner, both for Normal to Dry Skin. And the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel.
I like the cleanser and toner enough, but the 1% BHA Gel doesn’t seem to do much for me. There is a slight improvement, but I think I should try out the 2% BHA products.

Hi! Stumbled upon this blog accidently.
Really very informative! Thanks for the info.
I am interested to make my own beaded accessories. However, I do not have any leads to source for the materials. Can anyone assist me?
Is/are there any local distributors/wholesalers for the materials such as crystal beads, glass beads, findings, etc?
Would appreciate your kind input. Thanks so much.
Cheers…Elmo
Posted by: Elmo at May 18, 2005 07:52 PMThere are four shops in People’s Park Centre, including Golden Dragon, which sells beads.

Would appreciate very much if anyone could contribute some knowledge on such informations to me… tks alot!

While swirling about in front of the mirror one day in a self-tailored dress, it struck us that perhaps other girls would enjoy swirling around in our designs as well.
And so Swirl was born.
Our clothes are dreamt up by two girls who picked up dressmaking from scratch and inspired by vintage and timeless designs that we ourselves love.
We source for fabric here and overseas, and are always on the look out for rare vintage fabric to add that special touch. Quantities are kept small so as to keep our designs exclusive. You will never be caught wearing the same outfit as someone else.

Posted by: Karen at October 17, 2005 09:24 PMI’ve also bought from Bordello Princess before and was happy with what I got. It was a gorgeous 70s floral dress, which I’ve since worn to death.
Tried looking for my own vintage stuff while I was abroad, but everything out there’s way too expensive for what I could find. And I still had to have them mended, altered and dry-cleaned. So honestly, I’d rather pay a bit more on a website like this one, to get everything done for me and shipped for free.

Anyone know of something similar or shops that sells nice cheap tops with beads? I am quite a “beady” person. :O)

CALLING ALL FASHIONISTAS!
Are you shamelessly into designer labels and brand names and will go on leave whenever Club 21 has a sale?
Know who’s who in the fashion industry 10x better than the names of oh-so-distant cousins?
Have a top ten lust list of designer products you’d give an arm & leg for?
IF so, pls email me your particulars (name, email, contact no) at gipsyqsg@yahoo.com.sg! I plan to organise a FASHIONISTA BAZAAR to sell/buy strictly fashion labels (no Giordano, G2000, U2…) read: catwalk & runway names…pls contact me if you have a whole closet of brand new or preowned items which you would like to sell or swap. Those who would be keen to attend such an event are also invited to email me… Thanks and don’t let the credit card bite!

Posted by: Tamara at January 7, 2006 02:54 PMwow…this place is fun! it just gives us shopaholics another reason to shop!!!
BTW..does anyone know any place in Sg that customise wedding bands?
Posted by: alvamar at January 7, 2006 11:01 PMGreat site, I am enjoying checking out the shopping online! More reasons to spend now!
Alvamar, i think you should try the Singapore Brides forum to look for discussions for places to customise wedding bands. There are certainly quite a number of places that offer this service, but the prices vary. If you want the best offer, always ask for the quotations from each place first. Have fun with wedding prep!
