Mrs Jones / Fish Face

The 2 restaurants we most enjoyed in Australia - Mrs Jones in Melbourne (Drummond St) and Fish Face in Sydney (near King’s Cross).

Fish Face in particular was a great dining experience. Great food, fantastic service in a nice casual setting.

And we found Bill’s (“the quintessential Sydney cafe”) to be overrated, overpriced and severely lacking in service.

We kinda knew that before we went from the stuff we’ve read, but we just had to try it for ourselves.

Anyway, here’s an article about Bill Granger.

Oh yes! After waiting half an hour for my San Pellegrino, it was served in a warm glass! But I didn’t have it the worst, two ladies brought champagne and they were told to wait for their glasses to cool a little. And the restaurant wasn’t even half-full.

We also had dinner at the Sailor Thai canteen. I got upset when the white fish that I ordered turned out to be whitebait. Here in Singapore that is just the cheapest fish around. In fact, ikan bilis, the Malay word for whitebait, is slang for small fry. We use it to make stock, flavour vegetable dishes, or at best, have it as a side dish with peanuts.

Having ikan bilis as a main, for dinner, was not funny.

However, once I got over that initial shock, I had to admit that it was kinda nice crunchy and part of a very balanced Thai salad that was neither too spicy nor sweet. Jimmy’s pork dish was very good too. And the prices were reasonable, especially since we were lucky enough to have our own table outdoors. Otherwise, long table seating is the norm.
