Project Clay

Project Clay is a design & marketing expedition to Siem Reap, Cambodia.

To help build a vacation training school that would provide an opportunity to the disadvantaged woman in Cambodia, under Cambodian Women Crisis Centre (CWCC), to learn a life skill, such as weaving, sewing and pottery.

This expedition, Project Clay, will require about 20 volunteer artists, designers or marketing major individuals and will run for approximately 18 days. The team will be led by an Expedition Leader and a Facilitator, and is supported by Singapore International Foundation (SIF).

Project Clay aims to construct the platform where pottery skills can be learn. By building a training centre that may house the different stages in pottery making, as well as a furnace, promoting pedagogy of pottery. The team will provide basic designs (logos and patterns etc) for the handicrafts made by the ladies and branding the potteries made, so that it is marketable in Cambodia. Besides the above mentioned, volunteers are also required to provide youth interaction with the disadvantage woman to raise their self-esteem. Conditions will be basic as the team will be staying with the villages and cultural exchanges are inevitable.

As part of the preparation, volunteers are expected to commit their time in the pre-expedition activities and planning and other necessary meetings, which will run in October through the expedition. Other prerequisites of volunteers are:

  • 18 - 25 years of age (preferred)

  • Have a taste for adventure

  • Able to work efficiently under tight schedules

  • Applicants with Fine Art major (ceramic / painting / print-making / sculpture), Design or Marketing background, leadership experiences or video and photography skills will have an advantage

The expected dates of the expedition, 1st to 20th December 2004, have not been confirmed, as such there is no deadline for application. However, due to the limited preparation time, interested individuals are encouraged to send in their application as soon as possible, so that you can be included in the mailing list. There will be a briefing for all applicants shortly after the closing date. More details of the briefing will be made known to the applicants closer to the briefing date. Interviews may be conducted if the response is overwhelming.

The cost of the expedition is approximately S$1,500/= per person, but SIF will subsidise 70% (up to a maximum of $1,000/=) if you are a Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident (PR) and aged between 18 - 25 years. Applicants who exceed the age limit will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
