The Worst Nightmares

by Jonathan Penton

The worst nightmares are dreams of hope;
dreams of a future unattainable in life
but flirting with your fingertips
as you sleep.

I’ve dreamt of a world in which
the guy always gets the girl,
children always come home,
and we are always inches away from a viable peace.
I would rather wake up screaming from horrifying visions

than fly in Utopian dreams
and wake to find my shattered reality
solidly restored.

HISTORY (i.m. 11 sep 2001)

It has a curious way of making you wait
before striking. By day you fill in the usual
blanks, the same quota of sunlight. Flee
at night into sleep, into poetry which is
another kind of dreaming. And then it
flanks you like a predator. The news,
the naked shock, the futures payload emptied
into present. At once you know this is also
how love ends, how verse begin to fail.
That when a man wakes to find his lover
gone, he does not weep, or write sonnets.
He has breakfast, a cigarette, reads the paper
to find history has taken its place without us,
whatever our questions and our stories say.

I kinda like this one which Alvin Pang wrote as a reply to a QLRS Poetry Challenge.

Hey, I didn’t even see this stuff until yesterday. Don’t know why I missed it. Under the pessimist’s article or something. Also, I’ve been drunk the whole time.

Alvin’s poem is without a doubt more beautiful than mine, and expresses everything I expressed, plus more, with equal word economy. I couldn’t write like that. Of course, his poem will never attract new people to the art of poetry, whereas mine sometimes does. But that’s something I just say to make myself feel better. Neither his superior skill nor my broader appeal are relevant, as I can’t write like him, and need to write, so will keep doing my own thing regardless.

Hope you enjoyed your New Year’s, & that life isn’t really as strange as it seems.

I stumbled across it while browsing at the QLRS Forum (visit at your own risk) and hesitated for a while before posting it. But I figured if he minded, he could just email me and I’d remove it.

Btw, you didn’t miss it. It wasn’t here before. I have a way of back-posting. I just cannot bear “empty days” on the calendar and I have a good mind to remove the calendar completely.
