Four Thousand Hits
Last week saw a spike in the number of “requests” on Snog Blog. An amazing 4,077! But the number of comments have been dwindling, which only means one thing lurkers!
Can you guys please say something please? The post button is getting grey from lack of use.
Also, after a long struggle, I managed to set up the referrer script from Textism.
This is the first time that we exceeded the 3,000 mark. I don’t know exactly what the cryptic Ensim means by “requests” but I suppose it’s a case of the bigger the number the better. For the sake of comparison, the “requests” in the third week of blogging was about 1,337 and then it stayed in the 2,000s for the longest time, before leaping to the current wildfire status.
More coherent web stats generated by Web Trends.
In order to make the referrer script work, I had to change all my page extensions to .php, so it will be a while before we catch any referrers to the individual pages.
Posted by Karen at November 9, 2003 01:26 AM in web buildingI wonder if I should install a comment notification script. It notifies you whenever someone replies to a topic that you’re subscribed to. Pretty useful, but I do want people to check back so that they can see the other stuff posted, not just the things that they’re interested in.
What does everyone think?

Check out the stats for Oct 28 Nov 10.
I’ve become fixated on the referrer page. Someone from ford.com found us through some pretty raunchy keywords.

Hi Karen……I could never get the Textism Script to work. I know that the setup works fine and the refer tables are created. Just that the script that I include in each of the mainpages, just flat-out refuses to record any referrers. I suppose this was a problem that you faced. i would really appreciate if you could throw some light on how you got that fixed.
Posted by: Raj at March 5, 2004 04:34 AMHi Raj. You need to change the suffix of your pages from .html to .php in Moveable Type. This is the way I go the script to work.
There is another way to get .html pages to recognise php code within the pages but I had no success with that.
The only problem with changing all my pages to .php, I thought, was that google would have to reindex all my pages. But don’t worry, they only take a day or two to do so. So go for it.
Now, can you tell me how to take pictures with a shallow depth of field. I use a digital camera as well, but have not been able to get the blurred background look.

Posted by: Karen at March 9, 2004 01:11 AMHi
I’ve just read about how your referrer-system seems to work great.
I’ve been trying like a maniac to get the textism-script to work on my webpage. I don’t get any error message but no referrers are logged, so I’m quite puzzled, and then I read that you had made it work, so I’m a bit curious about how you did.
My index page is *.php…
If it’s not to much trouble I would really like to know how you did!
I appolligize if this is an untimely request.
Best regards
Soon
Hi Soon, I meant to reply to you earlier, but I guess it slipped my mind. I think you’ve made the same mistake that I did, which was to leave a copy of the file index.html on the server.
Most servers would give preference to the .html file over the .php file. I think that could be your problem.
And the stats for this week: 17 676
Posted by: Karen at March 15, 2004 02:04 PMHi Karen.
Thanks for the reply. I’ve now deleted any index.html in my webdir, and now the ref.page only tracks referrers if the link is directly to the ref.page… A bit odd. At the bottom of my index file, i’ve added the following line:
It’s taken from the setup file.
But to me, it seems as if the ref.script doesn’t get any info from the index file.
And by the way, there’s no .htaccess file on my server, but there shouldn’t be either? The link you provided to the girliesmatter seems to be taken out from her page, so I’ll try to see if I can locate the tip by searching instead :-)
Do you happen to know weather it matters if my web host runs in SafeMode?
Thanks again for your effort.
I tried to get the Textism script to work for me with no success. My question is this - do you have to have the script hosted within the same domain hierarchy as the page you want to track referrers to, or can it work without being in the same hierarchy? I’d like to track referrers to my blog, but I can’t host files on the server my blog’s on, just on another account of mine. Any ideas?
Posted by: Margaret Bauer at March 19, 2004 11:37 AMThat’s a good question. I *suspect* that it needs to be at the same level as the directory /blog, assuming /blog/index.php is the file you want to track.
I mean there must be a reason why I didn’t put the refer directory within my blog directory, right?
But I can’t be sure though. Waiting for Soon to try it out and see if putting both /refer and /blog at the same level solves his problem.

Posted by: Karen at August 15, 2004 04:58 PMDamn the spammers are getting to me. On Tuesday or Wednesday I think I got 382 spam comments, but that’s fixed now, I hope.
Just upgraded my referrer script to version 2.1, so I hope referrer spam will be DEAD as well.
